We Don’t Need Another Hero

Did anyone see the season premiere of Heroes last night on NBC? (I almost said “on channel 7”, but who knows what your channel 7 is?) I’ll probably see the season through to fruition and have that same sense of “feh” that I did at the end of the last one, but I can’t seem to bring myself to not watch it. I think because everyone else watches it and I feel out of the loop.
Speaking of loops, who the hell is the producer in charge of continuity and accuracy on that show? Holy crap on a cracker!
(You can assume there are “spoilers”, to use the term loosely, below the jump. I’m also inclined to wash my mouth out for using the term “below the jump”.)
So, first, a Japanese village is burning… in 1621. Japanese village. In Japan. 1621. When Hiro asks one of the wary villagers fleeing the scene what happened, the woman replies in Japanese (with subtitles), “The village is burning! Why?! Oh WHY is there no God above to save us now?”
Well, that would be because it’s 17th century Japan and you aren’t Christian. Jesus H!
Second, they should really, really bring in real Irish actors and if you’re not going to do that, hire a damn Irish vocal coach or something. Those were some of the most painful Irish accents I’ve heard in a long time. One guy kept waffling between crappy Queen’s English, Cockney and Australian and the other two sounded like they were about to declare their love of yellow moons, green clovers and purple horseshoes. Bad. Bad accents. Bad..
An aside, that’s one of those things that makes me cringe — poorly done accents. I will never try to fake an accent ever in my life. It’s mortifying to watch someone deliver a bad accent, especially in front of people who really speak that way. The entire time I was in England I made a point never, ever, ever to even come remotely close to trying to do an English accent. When I worked with Brits for several years, I picked up little colloquialisms and sayings, lilts and such, but I was really mindful of it when I was there. The last thing I wanted was to be a jackass American who thinks it’s cool to be English. You know the ones. Anyway, I digress.
Oh! The other thing? Claire the Cheerleader who is in hiding from whoever those people are who want her dead. Claire Bennet. Wait, now it’s Claire… Butler. Uh, way to hide there, Claire… with your same first name and same initials and same blonde hair. Witness protection has nothing on you.
So, Heroes. What do you think? Yeah? Meh? Feh?

I really enjoy the show. Yeah, there’s some plot holes, but every show has them. Mostly, I like the idea behind the show.

I took the whole god thing a different way-- that she didn’t mean the Christian God, just… any god. Like “why aren’t any gods protecting us”.
I enjoyed it, but yeah, there were definite plotholes (and those Irish accents? Yikes!) OF COURSE predicted what Peter’s (is it Peter? Or Nathan? not the flying one. The sponge one. I always get them mixed up) last line would be. “Who are you? Where did you come from?” DUH OF COURSE YOU KNOW WHAT HE’S GONNA SAY!
There were Portuguese missionaries in Japan as early as the 1560s, and Jesuits founding missions there even earlier. It’s not at all unreasonable to think that Japanese peasants of the early 1600s would either be Christian, or know of Christianity.
But yeah, the Irish accents were deplorable.

Lucky for me I don’t know enough about 17th century Japan to notice mistakes like that! But I can relate - last night I was watching the premier of Chuck and rolling my eyes so hard they almost fell out of my head. I mean, the guy diffuses the “bomb” (aka laptop with gigantic number countdown on the screen) with popups from a porn site. It’s like the producers weren’t even trying.

I do love the show and absolutely won’t stop watching, but I was very disappointed by the season premiere. It’s definitely hard for a show like this to remain as exciting as it was when it was NEW!, but I think the story lines developing now seem much weaker.

I have never been able to get into Heroes for some reason, and I’m usually watching the “docu-drama” (hah) 24 on Mondays, instead.
Those Irish accents were truly hideous. Bad enough to jar me out of the story, even, which sucked.
Now that you’ve mentioned it, I’d love to know what the actress actually said (if she named a god, or whatever), and what the translation would be.
Is anyone else miffed that Peter’s back already? Give us a little suspense. Jeez.

A agree with you on all counts, but I am putting all that aside because Heroes remains my favorite show right now.
However, if you saw Episode 2, I want to know what you thought of Peter Petrelli sitting in a room with his hands tied behind his back. I’m just imagining those guys with the bad accents tying him up but taking off Peter’s shirt and rubbing him down with baby oil all over his chest before leaving him alone in the back. Hee-lar-i-ous.

I will admit this weeks’ episode was much better. I like the show… that’s the rub. Sometimes it has all these issues, but I still like it. And even at the end of last season when I said, “feh”, I still liked it. Damn that show. haha!
