Put Your Hands Together for… PHIL!

I was watching So You Think You Can Dance last night and they had a special guest perform — a hip hop (or is it R&B or is it rap? I honestly don’t know anymore) artist named Lloyd.
That’s it — just Lloyd. Now, in my world, there’s only one Lloyd and that’s Lloyd Dobbler. A touchstone of my youth, Lloyd Dobbler from Say Anything was every guy I ever wanted to date: quirky, self-deprecating, romantic, yet strangely confident and a little odd. My kind of guy!
So to hear this guy was going around calling himself Lloyd, like it’s as unique as Madonna or Cher just seems silly. Of ALL the names to choose, you pick Lloyd? Why not just call yourself Larry or Chuck or Harold? Was Gary unavailable? With a name like Lloyd, don’t you think doing something of note would help with the name recognition?
It’s bad enough we’ve got Ludacris and Ginuwine with their horrifically misspelled names and gigantic egos, but now every “I wanna love you down and sex you up” performer with their shirt open thinks that they’re entitled to first-name fame.
Even Lloyd.
Now that I think about it, my accountant is named Lloyd and he can sing a mean commercial jingle, so this guy better not get too comfortable.

You are so right.
Lloyd Dobbler is the only Lloyd there is.

I never saw “Say Anything.” (Shut up.) It always seemed to me that Lloyd Dobbler was the high school version of Rob Gordon of High Fidelity fame. (I’m reading the book right now. Way better than the flick and I loved the flick!)
That said--I love Hok. He’s my boyfriend.
And Mia Michaels is my girlfriend. She and Jackie Warner. I get to be the meat in the middle of that sammich! Mmmmm....
I need a moment. Please excuse me.

Not to totally copy JozJozJoz but there really is only one Lloyd and it’s Lloyd Dobbler. When I was in high school and angst-ridden, I truly believed there was only one man who would ever “get” me - Lloyd Dobbler. Who would even consider taking his name? I bet hip-hop Lloyd is not even old enough to know who the real Lloyd is.
If you’re going to pick a glamorous one-word stage name, I’d go for ‘Lloyd’ any day over ‘Joe’. I mean.... Joe?! There’s one that’ll live long in the memory like Prince or, uh… Liberace.
Also, add Fabolous to the horrifically misspelled and inflated of ego.

@Rosco: Ok, I’ll give you that. Lloyd is definitely better than Joe. Do you have a Joe there? We don’t have a “Joe” that I’m aware of.
Fabolous? Are you serious?
You’re not familiar with the formulaic ‘R&B’ stylings of Joe? Well, then, allow me to enlighten you.

@Rosco: wow. JOE. That’s bold. Consider me duly enlightened. lol.
Am I the only one who, whenever I see the name Lloyd, wants to pronounce both L’s? Like, “luh-loyd”.
from hell
could have been worse.
could have been floyd.
and what parent names their kid, who is roughly our age or slightly younger, LOYDD? it’s like myran. or percy.
yes. i know a myran and percy. it’s sick.
