Olive the Other Reindeer

I’ll make this quick, as I am working my tuchus off to finish a project and shut down the office, so that we can be ready for our close-up on the Derek and Romaine Show this afternoon. OK, so it’s not a close-up, it’s a conference call, but we’ll take it! Find us on Sirius Channel 109 at 7:30 EST for those tuning in.
The other night I watched Olive the Other Reindeer for the first time. How did I miss this before? I love the name Olive for a dog, always have… and her friend Martini the Penguin? SO. CUTE. I thought the illustration/animation was fantastic and I love the modern spin on such a vintage style. Their clever use of screwed up Christmas songs for character names was fabulous. Plus, who doesn’t love a heartwarming children’s story that includes a leather daddy reindeer and a bar at the North Pole? Hey, I learned to make a Manhattan when I was 6 and I turned out OK, right? ... RIGHT?
I ran out to Target to see if I could find it, but they didn’t have it in stock. If you haven’t seen it, you really should. I’m bummed I went this long without seeing it. Drew Barrymore’s voice is perfect for Olive, but I think Martini (Joe Pantoliano) was my favorite. Dan Castellaneta did a great job on the evil, mustache-twirling Postman. Homer would be proud.
Anyway, I loved it.

We’ve watched it every year since it came out...it has become one of our holiday traditions...along with A Christmas Story.
Get a recording of your and Kathy’s call on that show, okay?

I haven’t seen this movie in a while, but I’m glad you reminded me of it.
And I SO wish a 6 year old would make me a Manhattan. That would be freaking awesome.

J.otto Seibold is an awesome illustrator. His books are fabulous and I highly recommend Mr. Lunch. http://www.jottodotcom.com/
He has some great collectible prints you would love, Joelle. His style is right up your alley, I think!

I’ve been quoting this movie for years! And no one ever got it. I’m always telling my kids, “I’m watching you, penguin.”
I love the Tim Meadows character, Richard Stands, not to be outdone by Michael Stipe’s Schnitzel, the flightless reindeer.
