Of Dorks and Photography
Joelle said at some point on July 19, 2007
I decided after my photography pity party last week that I would go out and shoot anything I could to get more practice. I worked my way through Old Town and Seaport Village, snapping photos of just about anything. I did manage to come up with a few good shots. It made me feel better about the whole thing, all of your comments and talking to my friend Peter helped, too.
I also started experimenting more with post-processing techniques. I am still a bit gunshy from back in the day when I was harassed (to put it gently) for using Photoshop on my photos (There’s no way my meager processing skills could shed 50lbs off this ass — blending out blemishes and whitening teeth are more my speed.), so I find it amusing that post-processing is all the rage now. Anyway, I tried a few and found that it’s really fun! I’d love to try to learn some fancier stuff. Bitca is always doing something new and interesting, but I don’t know if I have the patience for setting up big production shots and all that. We’ll see…
But, I may be more inclined to now that I have my very own GorillaPod! Oh, juicy jumped-up christ in a sidecar, I love my GorillaPod. I was taking these shots of animal crackers last night hand-held and they kept coming out blurry or bleached out or otherwise crappy, but when I tried with my GorillaPod, it was so much easier. I can’t wait to take it out with me for shots. Yay, GorillaPod!
Kathy and I are being asked by our editor to submit a “fun” photo for our bio section since our “professional” (if you can call my long-arm “professional") headshot is already going on the back cover of the book. They wanted to use this one, which we have some reservations about, mostly because we look like top shelf dorks. So, since we can’t get together right now, we’re thinking of staging a kooky, yet cool shot and having some fun with our fancy cameras and Photoshop. Any suggestions? Keep it clean, kids… OK, well, keep it tidy, at least.

First of all that photo of you is beautiful!!!
I suggest finding a old school waterskiing photo. You know the ones I am talking about where there are a couple people doing stunts, in B&W, kind of like this - but with two girls (or not...HAHA). Then photoshop your faces on there.
Or maybe a shot of just your feet, kind of themed like this.
How about your Senior Pictures, or some school pictures from Elementary School?
Maybe photoshopping yourselves onto a Thelma and Louise photo?
Or getting someone to do some great charicatures of you guys.
That’s all I got right now!

I also just changed the photo out because I wanted to post something more recent, but still thank you! For reference, this is the photo soapbox is referring to.

Thanks for calling me out
This will be fun though. And might I add you seriously can take a one-arm photo like no one I have ever seen…

@katie: hehe! thank you, thankyouverymuch.
I also just changed the link to Wiley’s URL. I’m sorry for outing you! It didn’t even occur to me, for some reason. Oops!

Oh no! You can totally out my blog anytime - I got nuthin’ to hide except some big white furry dogs. I meant outing me (and my questionable sense of humor) for suggesting the very silly photo!
Fortunately, I have matured past the point of suggesting anything as crass as topless or wet tshirt photos, for example. Boy, could you imagine the cajones to do that, even in jest?
Ahem.
No, I would simply suggest that the top shelf dorks photo is actually great for a “fun” photo. You’re supposed to look like dorks in that photo. Nobody is going to think that’s who you really are. That or, how about the Twitter photo of you two I see on the right hand side? That’s a nice one.

@Deltus: that’s our headshot.
hehe.
Nice shots.
If it isn’t too late, I have a few suggestions.
I like the idea of photographing your feet. Perhaps, you could wear matching/complimentary PJs and have wild colored pedis done or have fun socks on, etc.
You could try seasonal photos where you are each holding something from the season that fits your personality or that you love. For example, for me my summer item would be flip flops so I would hold a fan of bright colored flip flops.
You could have someone photograph you behind your camera with only half your faces showing or a side shot of you photographing.
You could each hold, lean on, etc. your favorite thing about where you live, work or simply something you love. Since you’re going for fun, something non-serious would work best. For example, I would photograph myself with my Pez dispensers.
Since you can’t get together right now, you could stitch the photos you each take provided you coordinate backdrops.
