Hibiscus Junkie
Joelle said around dinner time on November 3, 2007
Today I drove with my friend mikey up to the Hidden Valley Hibiscus Open House in Fallbrook. I’m turning into a complete hibiscus junkie. I wanted everything I saw, but couldn’t afford much, since they’re about 3 times the price of what I normally pay for a hibiscus. But, they’re really worth it. They are absolutely stunning. Blooms as big as your head! I am so not kidding. Most of the blooms were as big as salad plates… if not dinner plates. Crazy huge. Colors like you would not believe…
If you’re into tropical flowers, even if you’re not turning into Crazy Hibbie Lady like myself, I highly recommend checking out their website. I chatted with the woman who runs it today (also the grower and… breeder? Are they called breeders?) of these dynamic flowers, along with her husband. She told me they’d met online, which I thought was really cute. Anyway, I gave her my card because she put my name down on the waiting list for Some Like It Hot and Gator Pride.
Oh my god, I’m backordering plants. Next thing you know I’ll be subscribing to Hibiscus Fancy and making gardening clogs my permanent footwear. If I start talking about how green my thumb is and wearing a big floppy hat, someone medicate me.

They make pink garden clogs you know.... I’m just sayin’.

Wow! They are so beautiful. I liked the Belle du Jour, Cherry Appaloosa and Fat Actress.

@Geggie: I really liked Cherry Appaloosa, too. I’m not big on “doubles” the kind that look all fluffy, but I’m rather partial to Fat Actress, especially after seeing it live and in person. They have a new one called Island Queen that is totally amazing, too.
Cocktail: Fuzzy Navel (I am such a pansy)
I don’t blame you for loving Hibiscus’ so much. I was born in Hawaii, so I was able to see them for part of my childhood.
My little sister plans on using them everywhere when she gets married. They are absolutely gorgeous flowers.
*holds seringe upwards, taps with finger to get air bubbles out, remains at the ready*
They are nice flowers though.
I was going to ask if one could be a flower junkie but then I remembered what the opium plant looks like.

I have long wished for a greenhouse, or even room in my house where I had room to bring the plants in for the winter. I would have so many hibiscus then, too! Right now I settled for a bunch of Rose of Sharon bushes which are sort of similar but can handle the winter. Someday, though! Someday.
my great-grandmother grows some pretty magenta colored ones in her back yard. They get as big-as-yo-head every year. that woman has the greenest thumb of anyone I know.
and her name is rose gardner.... i swear to god!

That is an amazing photo. I totally understand backordering flowers. I receive those bulb magazines and I ordered about 3 sets of flowers. That was 3 years ago. They’re still in a box in the garage.
I did plant a box the first year I ordered. I planted 6 irises and only got 1 to grow. Bastards.
