Hello Dolly

Joelle said in the early morning on April 25, 2008

I can’t remember what I was watching when I thought of this a few weeks ago, but I was trying to remember what dolls and/or toys I had as a kid that I was especially attached to.  I remember having a lot of games, puzzles and art supplies, but as an only child I spent a lot of time with adults. I think I abandoned teddies and dolls at a relatively young age or at least didn’t form strong attachments to them.  Most of the dolls I had were porcelain, frou-frou dolls that were more for looking at than for playing with.  I had a few Barbies that I’d either stripped naked and marvel at the holes in their feet, hyperextending their limbs like the creatures from that bad Charlie Sheen movie about aliens or I’d give them Susan Powter haircuts and make them wear Ken’s clothes.

You know, that’s kind of weird now that I think about it.

Anyway, the point is I never really had a doll that I clung to, at least not for very long. I do recall a rag doll that I referred to as Dressy Bessy, whether or not she was actually called that is a mystery. She had a little gingham vest that would open and close with a big yellow button (I assume to teach dressing skills) and she was missing a blue plastic eye.  She had little red Mary Janes sewn right onto her feet with buckles that could be done and undone.  And, if I remember correctly, some sort of denim skirt with little underpants underneath that you could pull on and off.  I’m pretty sure I lost those right away since they weren’t sewn on.

There’s a hazy memory of a very tattered white teddy bear with a red tongue sticking out… also missing an eye.  I don’t know what that’s about.

Those are the only two dolls that I remember with any real fondness. The others, like I said, were more for looking at than playing with.  Part of me wonders whatever happened to them and wishes that I’d had the foresight to keep track of those sorts of things. I’m not really a keeper of stuff… or I wasn’t, anyway.  In my youth I parted with a lot of things I wish I’d held on to, not realizing the significance or emotional value they’d have later on.

Do you have any dolls or toys from your youth that you remember or wish you still had (or at least had better memories of)?

I have a “Clifford the Dog” that someone - a great-aunt, maybe? - made me that is still around, 35 years later. I’d drag him EVERYwhere.

The other item that I referred to as my “baby” was a molded plastic grizzly bear with huge teeth and red eyes. My mother has no idea how he became the object of my mommying except to say I was a “weird kid.” Shocking, no?

Hm. I still have my two favorite Teddy bears (both given to me on the day that I was born).  They now sit in Maya’s room, on top of her hutch, keeping watch.  :O)

I did have (and this is SO weird..) a small, soft, red star that had a little face sewn into it. I have NO idea where it came from, who gifted it or whatever, but I LOVED that thing.  I named it Herbie.  LOL

I remember thinking how special it was because no one else that I knew had a ‘Herbie’.  I think I was around 4 years old or so.

I have no idea what happened to it, but I do so wish that I still had it.

I was not a doll person, at all.

I was a Barbie freak.  I actually had custom clothes and dresses made by a seamstress.  So ... I used to like to nibble on Barbie’s rubbery wee feet.  When I was in college, that factoid actually came up in conversation, and my roommate said,

wait for it ...

“OMG, ME TOO!”

Wonder how many more of us Barbie-feet chewers there are?

Two toys I LOVED the most -

My Superman doll - from the original movie, yo.  I have had a Superman fetish ever since.  Everytime I stayed in the hospital as a kid,I had him with me.  I even would take him into surgery.  NOTE - I am wearing Superman flannel jammies as I type.  raspberry

My stuffed Snoopy.  I was too small to carry him any other way than by wrapping my wee hand around his neck.  It got ot the point that my mom would have to sew support stitches on his neck because his head would not sit up straight.

I wish I still had both!

Like you, I don’t remember playing with dolls much (if at all) when I was younger. Sure, I had Barbies, but I never really liked them all that much and since I had brothers, they spent most of their time naked and headless. I remember having a variety of stuffed animals, but none that I was particularly attached to. I do remember trying to name my stuff animals, not because I wanted to, but because I knew that what’s other people did and just thought I was supposed to. LOL

The one thing I do remember being very attached to? My pillow. And boy was I pissed the day I came home from school to find my mom had cannibalized my beloved pillow to make a costume for my little brother!

I had Dressy Bessy too! Not only that but Dapper Dan - same concept, different gender.

The only doll I wish I still had: Growing Up Skipper. You twist her arm and not only does she grow taller, she develops breasts.

She’s also developed a healthy collector’s value, which is why I wish I still had her!

Other than that - I spent years twisting my own arm and I got taller all right, but not much else…

Remember how we were all insane over Pentel pen sets in grade school? Only a few people had them and you had to beg to use them and then they would wig out and you HAD to put it back in the right place. I never owned Pentels :( I was so not in the hip clib.

I have my Madeline...she is a bear that has had every limb reattched, has cataracts over her eyes, numerous other “surigical” scars.  One leg and one arm is bigger than the other...and her fur is threadbare if not worn of completely.  She was named after the childrens book Madeline...even though I had her since I was born...Thanks Grammie and Pap…

My boyfriend gave me the best Easter gift...he found her!!! On Ebay...Whole...In very good shape...He dubbed her Madeline #2.

I wept...Just because he knew my most cherished posession and found it for me, so I can pass it on to my daughter.

No Boyd or any other collectible can replace her!

One Crazy Summer

I think a mid-Summer update is in order. Oh me oh my!  This Summer has been insane.  But, in that good way. This girl can’t complain!  There are projects looming, launching and everywhere in between that I am so excited to be working on.
