Give Me a Big Fat Break
Joelle said in the early morning on July 22, 2008
I’m kind of too irritated with this ad to make intelligent commentary about it. All that keeps coming out my mouth is “WTF?” and that’s not exactly eloquent.
I was served this ad while checking my MySpace email this morning. Uh… this woman is big? Are you kidding me?! The part that makes me mad? I’m close to this woman’s size and this means I’ve busted my ass for all this time to be told I’m still fat by a MySpace ad? SCREW YOU, world. I’m so over it. I’m so tired of women not being good enough.
To hell with you, society. Bollocks to you, media! Better be careful, one of these “big” beautiful women might eat you! Stupid. Stupid!
Look, I told you it wasn’t going to be eloquent.

That ad is terrible. I don’t blame you for being miffed.
My take? This chick just wasn’t airbrushed and photoshopped like most advertisements. Thusly, she looks--oh, I don’t know--real.
And anyone who thinks she’s fat should fucking suck the smeg off a homeless man.

@Ms. Pants: well, that’s… visual. LOL.
That is fucking bullshit.
I was going to comment on your post, but I cannot take my mind of the visual of Ms. Pants’ “fucking suck the smeg off a homeless man”. Ms. Pants, you just killed my inner child. With one sentence. I just cannot express my admiration for this enough. *applauds*
Yeah, the media focus on waifs so thin they break in a strong breeze if they’re not facing the right way is so ingrained in the minds of marketers now, they don’t know how to market to real people.
Dude, I’m always struggling with diets and calorie counting with the goal of getting as thin as that woman! I think she looks perfectly healthy, not overweight at all. I’d give my right arm to have her figure!
And the whole “BBW” thing just kinda squicks me out. Why can’t someone just be attractive or not, why does size matter? I’ve seen attractive men and women of all sizes, and you know what I call them? Attractive, hot, sexy, beautiful, whatever! No need to consider their size.

I want to be clear that I have nothing against thin women or “waifs” or anyone else. I don’t want to imply that my rant against the media has anything to do with skinny women. I’m not hating on skinny women, this ad is just wrong.
I only say this because last time I made commentary of this ilk, where I said something about “sandwich-eating women”, it was pointed out that my comment is degrading to thin women (or words to that effect), because they eat sammiches, too. I understand this and don’t want my argument misconstrued.
I also am not a “pro-fat” or into “fat acceptance” or any of that either. In fact, I’m anti-that. Not self acceptance… I’m down with that. But I’m not down with “pro fat”. If you’re going to try to convince me that you’re perfectly healthy and at your best at 5’6” and 300 lbs, I’m going to call you deluded, plain and simple.
I am just sick and tired of everyday women, women that are basically healthy, appear to be within their average weight range (give or take 10 lbs) being called fat. Of course, I have a problem with fat people being called fat, because it’s no one’s place to do that, but at least that’s accurate.
Girls in this world have to put up with so much pressure. I remember the pressure I grew up with and how it effected me. It’s 100x worse now. 1000x worse, maybe, and it makes me sad when places like MySpace, which is unundated with young girls, showcases ads like this.
Great...now I’m a fetish. That makes me feel so good about myself.

It’s because the “fashion world” assholes consider anything size 12 and up to be “plus sized”.

@Manic Witch: Actually, in modeling now, size 10 and up is “plus”. Size 4 and under is “mainstream” and in between you’re told to either gain or lose weight. GOD FORBID anyone be in the middle anymore.
They actually prefer “mainstream” models to be 0s to 2s. Even 4s are getting a little too meaty these days. Designers want girls to be as thin as possible so as to represent the clothes hanging on hangers instead of filled out by bodies.
Isn’t that just lovely?
Doesn’t that just make you want to fling bacon grease at people?
(Not the bacon, mind you. No sense in wasting good bacon. Just the grease.)
Size 4 and under is “mainstream” and in between you’re told to either gain or lose weight.
Are you kidding me?!??! I would be told to either lose or gain? I don’t want to gain and if I lost anymore I’d look horrible.
It really is no wonder so many women have no sense of reality in regards to their own appearance.

@Andrea: Yeah, when I did a little modeling, I was told at one point that I was too fat for “normal” modeling, but too thin to be “plus”, so it was gain, lose, or quit. I chose the latter. I went back and did “plus” later when I did actually gain weight, but I just didn’t like modeling, period.

That’s pretty crazy. This is what a normal woman looks like, IMO. Not a BBW. Most men who are into BBW would tell her to put on a few!

And since the industry and designers want only tiny or hugely obese women for models, the will only make clothes in sizes to fit them. The rest of us are forgotten, shunted to the side and told we’re SOL, that we now have to make the best we can with burlap sacks. It’s fucking ridiculous and unnecessary.
