Frosted Fossils n’ Chocolate Cake
Joelle said at some point on March 4, 2008
I’ve mentioned that I like Ace of Cakes because it reminds me of some of the crazy, yet creative projects I would do as a kid. Bear in mind that these projects were never assigned, it was usually something like “write a one-page book report on a book of your choice"(mine was Nancy Drew and the Phantom of Pine Hill, if I recall correctly...). I would always write the one page report, but it would be accompanied by props and stage lighting in some capacity. My presentations involved drama! (Insert jazz fingers here.) If I had a chance to paint a refrigerator box as a kid, by god, I took it. I think I get that from my mom… she was a theater arts major…
Anyway, as I was watching Ace of Cakes the other day, I was reminded of my Glacier Cake I made as a science project in 8th grade. Yes, leave it to me to make pastry a tool for scientific theory. As I watched Duff carve a cake into the shape of a German shepherd, I thought about how I did the same thing with my Glacier Cake. The project was just to do a report and maybe a poster board-type display of your chosen scientific topic. I chose glaciers, for some reason.
Each layer was a different flavor and there was assorted icing in between and each layer with various stuff in it (nuts, sprinkles, whatever) that represented a separate layer of the Earth’s crust. I designed it so there was a cross-section of the cake cut out so you could observe the layers (my dad took the burden of eating that piece), but it was carved to look kind of like a mountain… like a ski slope. I even made little trees that went on top.
Look, people. If you can eat cake and get extra credit, you’re a fool to pass that up. And extra credit is what all these sorts of responsibility-avoiding projects yielded me. I don’t know how beneficial this was to my actual education as I got away with presenting very little actual information sometimes. I’d manage to pull an “A” because my creative b.s. was just that creative. It’s the element of surprise, I think.
Plus… there is the cake. Cake always works.

I love that show but not as much as I love cake.

@sizzle: what’s your fave? I think mine are carrot with cream cheese, red velvet with buttercream and then maybe… yellow cake with chocolate icing… it’s kind of a toss-up between that and devil’s food.

There’s always room for CAKE!

Black Forest & German Chocolate are my favorites.
Joelle, we have to eat cake together, as your list is the exact same as mine.
I am thinking...cake party? But after the next installment of the PAW (as that one includes the DIET.) Cake Party in May!

cake party? let me know when to order the petit fours.
If you’re going to bribe a grade, best do it with cake.
I believe in cake.

Carrot cake ranks at the top of my list - but it has to be made *just* right. None of that whipped cream frosting - oh no. Cream cheese all the way. And never, never, ever from a mix. But with fresh ingredients including shredded carrots. I’d like to say I mastered my own recipe - but bow to one of the local bakeries here instead.
Eat cake. Be happy. And all’s good with the world.

I love that show too! I am amazed by what they can do with cake and rice krispie treats. My favorite is red velvet with buttercream, hands down… and I am so hungry for cake right now…

Must we discriminate between cakes?? Can we not love each cake equally for the reasons that make each of them great in their own way??
Perhaps there would be more peace in the world if more people embraced cake…
Creativity always won me brownie points with the teachers, too. Looking back, it was probably just nice to have someone shake things up a little bit rather than the same ole same ole. Red velvet and buttercream’s probably my favorite… Mom always made those for our birthday cakes growing up, so that probably has something to do with it.
I so love Ace of Cakes. Duff’s laugh is just infectious. And man, why didn’t I ever think to use cake for my school projects? All those dioramas and crap could have been made of chocolate! Damn.
Dammit! All of you!!!
I’m craving cookies and cake again today (took a break for a couple of days while my body chose to, instead, crave gummy candy for some reason...maybe because it’s awesome? I dunno...), and this post and the subsequent comments ARE NOT HELPING!
Fuuuuuuck.

the taste of chocolate is a sensual pleasure in itself, existing in the same world as dreaming… For myself, I can enjoy the tasty pleasure of chocolate… entirely by myself and might others. Furtiveness makes it better. Eat more chocolates!!!!
I do have a chocolate site too, check this out

Thanks for letting me comment on your site :D
I do like that show and i have a good mood towards cake that too especially for chocolates. I use to prepare on my own and sometimes prepare for our family members birthday and give them surprises. Good article, nice work.

Creativity in cake designs are important. so with the taste, but we must know that the look of the cake has a big appeal for most of us.
