Do You Hear What I Hear?

I don’t really dig most of the newer pop Christmas tunes. I enjoy Christmas songs in reasonable doses, as long as they’re not overly religious (though I do have a soft spot for O Holy Night) or Barbra Streisand’s Jingle Bells. But I just don’t really care to listen to every Tom Dick n’ Britney’s Christmas CD. OK, maybe not Britney, since I don’t recall her releasing a holiday CD, thankfully. I could look it up on Amazon, but let’s not destroy my fantasy — it’s Christmas.
I’m talking about albums like Hansen’s Snowed In, N*Sync’s Home for Christmas
, or Jessica Simpson’s Rejoyce
(not only is she an incredible (over)singer, she’s a talented speller, that one!). Not even Christina Aguilera’s My Kind of Christmas
. Don’t get me wrong, Christina has some pipes (questionable fashion choices sometimes, but damn fine pipes), but I’m just not into it.
Perhaps that’s unfair. I’ve not listened to the CD and since she does have a great voice, maybe I’d like it. Given that I don’t really listen to any of those artists outside of this discussion pretty much guarantees I won’t dig their holly jolly offering, anyway. Anyone who wishes to release a Christmas CD is more than entitled and I’ll admit there are a few newer albums that have made their way into my collection. Michael Buble’s Let It Snow, Sarah Maclachlan’s Wintersong
and both of Brian Setzer’s
to name a few.
Overall, I am just partial to the classics. Growing up our house was filled with Frank Sinatra and Rosemary Clooney. Perry Como, Bing Crosby and Nat King Cole… those versions of Christmas songs are the classics to me, anyway. Now, why I decided the cut-off for “classics” was Wham’s Last Christmas is beyond me, but it’s true and I won’t be ashamed! For some reason, it’s just not Christmas until I’ve heard that song. (And I won’t pretend Run DMC’s Christmas in Hollis isn’t hiding in there somewhere.
)
I wonder if when the kids of this generation are our age, they’ll think that Hanna Montana’s Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree is nostalgia in a song. Why Last Christmas is OK with me and Miley Cyrus is not, I can’t say, but it does remind me to send Reilly some more Jazz for Kids
CDs. *note*
Here’s one of my faves, remixed on Merry Mixmas, uploaded for your listening enjoyment.
I had a player here, but it was just so unsightly, I had to ditch it. Be a dear and save it to your desktop, won’t you?

Last year BBW partnered with Make A Wish Foundation to sell a holiday music cd pack (2 cds - one titled Glow, the other Glisten). I picked it up on a whim and it ended up being a favorite. My oldest boy (2 at the time) couldn’t get enough of The Pussycat Dolls version of Santa Baby...played it over and over and over and sang along with it. Other favorites from the cds include Someday at Christmas by Mary J. Blige, A Marshmallow World by Bing Crosby, The Man With the Bag by Lee Ann Womack, Stay a Little Longer, Santa by Shemekia Copeland, Mr. Heatmiser by Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Winter Wonderland by Jason Mraz, Let It Snow by Chris Isaak, and Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas by Linda Ronstadt. Wow… that’s a bigger list than I anticipated. Anywayz… given my interpretation of your taste in music (I may be WAY off base… apologies in advance for any false presumptions.
), I thought you might be interested in some of these.

don’t make me post a bunch of emo bands doing christmas songs...just don’t. i think the all christmas albums by one artist are just too much...i dig on compliations with a bunch of different artists doing songs. that way you get some variety.
but i’m really commenting because i have to say i totally feel you about christina “chihuahua” aguilera. she would sound way better if she wasn’t yelping like a dog all the time.
Looked at his dog, OH MY GOD! A ILL REINDEER!!

@macgeezel: I knew I could count on you, dude. hahaha!
@chickrawker: I feel similarly. I don’t mind the occasional Christmas ditty by whomever, but a whole Christmas CD of Hansen? But then, I’m not a Hansen fan and I bet there’s an 11 year old girl somewhere who thought it was the best Christmas album ever.
@lani: I remember those! I like all kinds of music, honestly. I just don’t listen a lot to newer artists, period. I personally am not a big fan of Mary J. Blige (I think she’s overrated), nor the Pussycat Dolls, but the rest of that sounds good. Especially Big Bad Voodoo Daddy and Jason Mraz. Thanks for the recommendation!
@daniel: Thanks, I’ll check that out!

I like the classics too but, for the most part I prefer instrumental. “Winterlude: Instrumentals for a Contemplative Christmas” is my favorite. The only other Christmas music I’ll listen to is Sarah McLachlan’s Wintersong - I love it.

@DJ: What is Winterlude? Who does it?

I am with you on this. All of my Christmas music is either Burl, or Elvis. LOL
And I LOVE Brenda Lee’s versions of everything too.
I love Last Christmas, although I rarely admit it. Heh.
Oh oh, and Frosty the Snowman by the Cocteau Twins. I think that is my favorite version of that song…

Wow, everything you said sounds like something I’ve said myself. I LOVE the classics--my iPod is full of Bing and Perry and Nat and Frank and Burl and Dean and everyone of that ilk. I do have Last Christmas and a Mariah Carey version of All I Want for Christmas is You, oh and a song or two sung by U2 and Bon Jovi, but for the most part, all my favorite songs are done by people who are dead.
I guess I don’t like listening to the newer versions because most of the singers today just seem to be a drop in a hat, and probably nothing that will endure with the years like the aforementioned crooners. Their versions will probably sound dated, not classic, and lots of them just aren’t amazing in their talents. Only time will tell though.

Totally agree! There are only so many versions of the same song that one can be endured to sit and listen through.
Add to the original list tho, Andy Williams Most Wonderful Time of the Year, and Karen Carpenter’s Merry Christmas Darling, too. They truly rank in the classics category - where the voices and arrangements complimented each other instead of competing against each other.
Do you remember the Texaco Christmas albums that were released every year?

@dKaye: You’ve said the magic words: Karen Carpenter. I don’t care how cheesy the Carpenter’s are, I love her. Love, love. I think her voice was gorgeous. I don’t remember the Texaco Christmas albums, though.
The biggest problem I have is that when you’re in a mall or something, you hear songs you love 9287349834978623876 times over and over and then you hate them, until next year when your inner Herbie comes back to life again and you can enjoy the Christmas tunes once more.
from the middle of nowhere.
Now that you mention it… I actually don’t really like the Mary J. Blige Someday At Christmas song I listed up there. Not sure how that slipped on to my list. I DO like the Santa Baby song by Pussycat Dolls, though.
More the song than the singers… I wonder if there’s another version somewhere? What fun post dialogue. I’ve got some new songs to try out.
Thanks you guys.

The Texaco Christmas albums were samplers of Christmas songs performed by various artists - Bing, Perry, Andy, Dean, Nat, Frank, Eartha, Brenda Lee, et al. All the traditional offerings. We used to get the albums every year. I believe my mother still has them, stashed away somewhere. On vinyl, no less.

I’m glad sinatra realises how popular and respected he is. he has such a lovely voice and the lyrics are so beautiful I’m 15 and was raised on sinatra, his name will live on.
The Taylor Swift version of “Last Christmas” is the best, I was actually listening to it less than 2 minutes ago. Then there’s also the other teen Disney star, the Miley Cyrus version she sang at the Disney parade.
