Deck the Halls with Sand n’ Snow

It’s been really chilly here lately in the mornings. Enough that I’m starting to worry that my hibiscus might not stand a frost this Winter, which in San Diego is more like what you’d find on the outside of a beer mug and nothing like what’s going on the middle of the country.
Born in Northern California and growing up in Southern, it was a very long time before I saw actual snow. Like, on the ground… where you can touch it and step in it and make a snowball. In fact, it was 18 years before I saw that and we had to drive a few hours up into the mountains to do it. I do recall once when I was a teenager (I think I was about 14) that there were some freak snow flurries on Christmas Eve for about three minutes. That was the first time I remember seeing anything that remotely resembled snow. I recall distinctly standing outside in my Esprit sweatshirt and Guess denim mini, asking my dad if this was snow and wondering if it would deflate my enormous bangs.
When I got to Texas, I eventually saw more snow (though ice most often) and a few proper snow falls, standing in my apartment in my bathrobe with a cup of hot coffee… the way nature intended.
I saw this article in the local news this morning and thought it was pretty interesting. Apparently, 40 years ago today, in 1967 San Diego saw real true-to-life snow… if only for a little bit. I’m kind of into local history, so it was interesting to me, anyway. Maybe if I wish hard enough it’ll snow here this Christmas. Given the state of the Earth’s environment, it doesn’t seem that far-fetched…
Though, I don’t know what San Diegans would do… flip flops and scarves?

-2 C here (Um, 29 F, I think?). I love snow, when it first comes. If we could have actually snowy winter for, like, a month, that would be perfect for me. Unfortuantely, it sticks around for 3 to 4 months. Stupid snow…

ROFL, I’d probably be one of those people out in flip flops and scarves! I’ve heard tales that it’s snowed in the LA area where I grew up a few times (I always heard it as 20 years ago, so I guess that means it was probably in the ‘60s also). I wouldn’t mind if it snowed for a little bit, just to see it, but not enough to damage things and make people bust out the shovels.
Though, if you thought SoCal folks can’t drive in the rain…

We just got our 1st ice storm in my area today, got a couple of good photos. But I have to tell you, I almost spit out my coffee all over my monitor when I read the line about the bangs. We graduated HS at the same time, and boy, do I remember the bangs!!

HAHA! I just did the flip-flops & scarf thing this morning but it was only to take my garbage can out to the curb. It was 10 degrees (-3 with windchill) when I woke up an hour ago. For as much as I hate the cold & driving on the dangerous roads, I couldn’t imagine not living in an area where it didn’t snow.
I nearly fell off the couch when I read about you worrying about deflated bangs because, wow, did that ever give me a flash back of walking into school during snow storms. I carried one of those Braun curling irons and hairspray in my purse in case of emergencies. heh.
Having lived on the East Coast my whole life, I can’t remember ever not seeing snow! We’ve got snow forecast for this weekend, and I’m looking forward to it. It always makes me feel like a little kid again. That is, until I have to clean the white shit off my car and drive to work, cursing the whole way.
