An Open Letter to My Thighs
Joelle said during happy hour on November 4, 2007
Dear Thighs,
Full disclosure: I ate gelato today. I know, I know. You’re trying to get all svelte and glorious for SXSW, but seriously, have you had pumpkin gelato? I don’t think you understand the gravity of the deliciousness involved here. Besides, I’d never had gelato before, so if tasting that mind-blowing, taste-bud shattering goodness means a weensy bit more trunk junk in March than I’d planned, well then so be it. You’ll just have to make friends with the elliptical trainer because I make no apologies. Life is meant to be lived, not obsessing about whether or not one scoop of gelato will cause Your Royal Dimpleness to explode into cellulite like a Maguai after midnight. So guess what, Thighs? Just for tonight, I’m giving you the Finger. Right after I lick this drop of gelato off of it.
xoxo,
Joelle

Gelato is so worth the extra gym time, and honestly there aren’t that many things that I would say that about.
Cocktail: Fuzzy Navel (I am such a pansy)
Mmmm Gelato. Very good. Very right. Go girl.

Haha, if you changed gelato to Hooters buffalo chicken strips and cheese fries. Then changed SXSW to Vegas, that would be me today and exactly how I feel!

You can’t put “gelato,” “lick,” and “thighs” all in one sentence without sending your entire readership into an, erm, tizzy.

Okay - I have never heard of Gelato… What the hell is it?

Pumpkin gelato? Whoa.
btw, Have you read Eat Pray Love? Elizabeth Gilbert spends a lot of time talking about gelato in Italy. WIll make you want to book a trip.
Now I have that goddamned Maguai song in my head. And I blame gelato.
from San Diego, CA • Cocktail: slightly dirty Grey Goose martini
@that geeky chick: ain’t that the truth? haha. I must go to the gym later.
@jamie: mmmm… cheese fries.
@the slackmistress: hahaha! *tempts* We need drinks soon.
@soapbox: it’s basically ice cream, but much denser and smoother. Incredible. I asked the Oracle for you.
@merseydotes: It’s on my nightstand right now! I’ve not started it yet, but I really should. Italy is my most coveted destination anyway, so this book sounds right up my alley.
@Deltus: There’s a song?!

Oh, how I love gelato. Italy was dangerous—gelato morning, noon and night. The good thing is, it actually has LESS calories than regular American ice cream. My last gelato fix was one scoop of ginger, one scoop of cardamom.

@Geggie: omg, those sound delicious. I think I’ll be investigating some more exotic flavors soon. I had the pumpkin and sampled the chocolate hazelnut (which I’ve got in my freezer, but have not indulged in yet). That was like eating frozen Nutella. *faints*
OK you NEED to tell me where you got pumpkin gelato. I’m sure it was at some awesome CA place we don’t have over here, but whatever. Also, you will definitely have to check out the Whole Foods market in Austin. They have lots of gelato, including some adventurous flavors like basil! (Did I tell you I’m maybe probably possibly going to SXSW now? I think.)

@geeky: YAY! I hope you do. Kathy and I are staying at… uh… damn, I can’t remember if it’s the Hilton Garden or the Courtyard Marriott. Anyway, we’ll have to meet up.
And I got it at this little place around the corner next to my favorite thai place. It’s calle Gelato Vero. I’d hung out there as a teenager, pretending to be cool, but I’d never eaten the gelato until yesterday. It was glorious. The pistachio was really awesome, too.
You know, I can’t remember where we’re staying either! All I know is that it’s not at the Hampton Inn, they were booked :( But when I know for sure if we’re going, I’ll let you know and we will definitely meet up!

I’ve seen alot of autumnal flavors at various gelato places (I live in VA, so can’t help you in SoCal.) Pumpkim, Maple, etc. I love it.
My standard fave is straccitella. It’s vanilla with a ripple of chocolate....almost like chocolate chip. And, a note to remember, if you like mint only get mint gelato that is NOT green. Green is a sure sign that it’s artificial mint flavor. Once you’ve had the authentic real mint, you’ll never go back.

If you love pumpkin gelato, you’ll love my pumpkin ice cream, Joelle. I’ve been perfecting the recipe at home for the last few months now. It’s heaven.
And since I can’t get enough pumpkin ice cream, I bought two bottles of pumpkin spice syrup from my local coffee vendor. Too bad it doesn’t taste like pumpkin. More like a spiced vanilla syrup. Very disappointing, actually.
So, I took the second, unopened, bottle back and they exchanged it for a lovely Gingerbread syrup that had arrived just the afternoon. It was the first bottle of the season and was meant as a training tool for the upcoming seasonal promotion. Score! I swear to gawd, I thought of you as a grinned like a retard and drooled all the way home. Joe couldn’t understand my stupid reaction, but I knew you would! Whooooooo! :-D

BTW, sorry to have to break the bad news to you all…
Althought gelato is lighter in calories, it’s dense for a very good reason. It contains more fat than regular ice cream. The more egg yolks that go into a batch, the fluffier the texture is. And that’s before the homogenised milk and other dairy like cream that goes into the mixtures and before the pistashios and other nuts which are their own source of fat.
It sucks that ice cream has all kinds of bad stuff yet is so tasty, right? Well, now I have to pay for my sins. I was put of Lipitor last week. Yah, me. Whoo.. Not.
