You’re Taking My Picture

I’m getting kind of excited to take photos again. I’m not sure why, if it’s the prospect of introducing myself to a new city or if I just feel the need to be creative in a different way, but I really miss using that D80 that was loaned to me by Nikon in 2007/2008. Looking at some of the photos I took back then makes me wish I was still doing it.

They’re not all brilliant, but I think I have a knack for it — granted, I have no idea what 80% of the buttons and dials do and I wouldn’t know my aperture from my elbow, but I really want to learn.  The D80 was pretty sweet, but I definitely don’t want something that big again — it was kind of a beast. Took awesome photos, but way more camera than I needed. It kinda hurt my neck, actually.  But I definitely want something more than point n’ shoot.

Las Vegas is just ripe for the picking in terms of imagery that I would love to take photos of — vintage neon, old school Vegas, mid-century and/or totally over the top style, tourists in bad outfits… the list goes on  and on.

Most folks have been telling me to get a Nikon D50 or a Canon Rebel.  So, I’m starting my perusal of cameras… window shopping, if you will. Santa may be bringing one down the chimney this year.

i’m just gonna say that a rebel still may be too much camera. canon does a great camera that is in between a point and shoot and a digital slr that takes AMAZING photos – the powershot sx30is. seriously look into that before going to a dslr – you may find that it’s enough for you and will appreciate that you don’t need to lug a bunch of equipment to get great photos.

For what it’s worth, I love my Sony Alpha DSLR-A330. I test drove a Canon Xsi and Nikon D3000 before deciding on the Sony, it just seemed the most user-friendly to me. It’s pretty lightweight for a DSLR, takes nice photos, and has little in-camera guides that help make sense of what effect different settings (aperture, ISO, etc) will have. Compatible lenses and accessories are harder to find in stores, but readily available on line. My kit came with a 18-55mm lens which is fine, but I supplemented it with a 50mm lens that I absolutely love. Unfortunately I took all my Sony pics off my Flickr while I’m merging a couple accounts and reorganizing them, but there are plenty of other good examples out there. Anyway, good luck shopping, and I think your pictures are great!

i <3 your pictures and totally think you should get yourself a nice camera. i do have a canon rebel xt and love it. except it's just too big, expensive and heavy to drag around all the time. plus, i kinda don't know much about all the features either… which is why i have been thinking about something smaller and chickrawker's suggestion sounds pretty good to me :)
