I Almost Titled This ‘Toe Sucks’, But That’s An Entirely Different Entry

  • November 27th, 2007

I have to make a declaration.  In fact, if I could sky-write it, I would. They used to just be tucked away with the novelties, but now with the weather getting cooler and Christmas around the corner, they’re starting to make more overt appearances and it’s freaking me out.

I hate toe socks.  I find them bizarre and unsettling.  I don’t want my toes all separated like that.  And really, is all that extra material between each toe really necessary?  I just endured everyone’s toes for three hot months of summer, I don’t need to see everyone’s individual piggies in a blanket, too. That’s why we have socks!  Plus, that extra material makes everyone look like Barney Rubble, anyway.

Now, I do love what I call my Woobie Socks (I am currently wearing these, often accompanied by my Woobie Robe), which are those ultra squishy house socks. Sometimes they come with little treads on the bottom so you don’t fall on your coccyx.  I’m not sure how I feel about the little treads, but I love the socks.

But toe socks… I just don’t get it.  I know people who are way into them and we’ve gotten into heated debates over the merits of toe-to-toe contact vs. toe segregation.  So, Internet, I ask you this: Toe sock or not toe sock?  That is the question.

I HATE TOE SOCKS.  Especially people who wear them with flip flops.

Joelle said on 11/27/07 @ 8:27pm

@Kathy:  Please tell me Captain Mandals doesn’t do that, too?

Captain Mandals! AHAHAHAA!

*coughs*

Toe socks?  Uh. That would be a no. No for me.

I actually have a pair because I thought they were totally cute.  Then I put them on.  They completely creeped me out.  I did not like them AT ALL. My toes need to be together.

Those woobie socks?  I own about a zillion pairs of them.  Gawd. I LOVE them.  I love to slide around on my wood floors in them.  None of mine have the sticky thingies on them though, so a busted coccyx is just a matter of time, really.

No toe socks, PLEASE.  I shudder just thinking about them.

I love any other kind of socks, especially sleep socks.  I have a bit of a sock obsession.

And I’m late to the party, but I wanted to congratulate you on the publication of your book.  You rock!

I have on my squishy socks and robe as I write this.  I love them.  I’m not a fan of tow socks either.  I’ve never worn them, and they just creep me out.

I just had a discussion with Endora today about those.  She LOVES them, I HATE them.  I wonder if she’s doing it as part of teen rebellion?  The great toe sock debate?

I’ve never worn toe socks myself, but I’m 90% sure I would hate them. Besides, my feet are always cold already, so I don’t think toe segregation is going to help the situation any.

mel said on 11/28/07 @ 7:07am

I like toe socks, but I don’t have to have them.  I was never a huge fan of socks to begin with and I normally don’t wear any but sometimes the right mood strikes and the toe socks are sported.  Different strokes.

Deltus said on 11/28/07 @ 7:24am

I think toe socks are one of those things that sound neat on paper, but in real life application fall far short of the promise.  They’re weird looking, and do nothing but make your toes colder (if you’re in a place that gets *actual* winter, that is).  Anyone who knows what a cold climate is like knows that mittens are warmer than gloves.

Besides which, don’t people have very different toe lengths?  Like, not just “this person has long toes and this person has short toes”, but comparison between the different toes on the same foot?  Or are those toe socks “one sock fits all toes”?

Joelle said on 11/28/07 @ 8:08am

@mel:  I just remembered that you like ‘em. grin Toe sock sporter!  hehe.

@geeky: down with toe segregation!

@Maria: thank you!  grin

@daniel:  OK!  grin I will come ova and see da tree!

@Jen: mind your coccyx. wink

@Manic Witch: I love that you call her Endora.  raspberry She was always my favorite. Endora was just like my grandmother.  lol.

@Geggie: I have on my woobie socks n’ robe, too. hehe.

I love woobies.  My cats also love my woobie robe.  It’s ultrasoft, as you know.

As for toe socks, I send them to people because they freak me out.  You know me.  It makes sense.

i have a confession to make: i so wanted to be a toe sock person. i really did. i actually own a couple pair of them and boy, are those socks uncomfortable!! all this fabric bunched up between each toe and then smashed into a shoe is not a good feeling. and my son is afraid of them as if mama’s stripey, colorful toes are waiting to attack him or something. so basically i need to just trash them and get over it.

witchypoo said on 11/28/07 @ 12:55pm

Toe socks have their advantages.

None of that pesky toe jam!

Word Validation: couldnt (snarf)

Joelle said on 11/28/07 @ 1:13pm

@mama:  I wanted to be one, too!  The initial thought was, “well, my toes would be even warmer and how’s that bad?” but yeah, putting them on is WEIRD.  Unless they’re really worn out, wash ‘em and give ‘em to Good Will.  I dare say here’s a hobo who needs some toe socks.

@witchypoo:  ew.  LOL. EW!  haha!

@ms. pants: you’re a woobie queen, too. grin

Toe socks are goofy ! My sisters used to wear them on occasion when we were kids, but I thought they looked way too silly. I prefer dressy socks, personally.

Not to sleep in, just to be stylin’ and profilin’ !!

Oh no, the toes cannot be separated under ANY circumstances other than for pedicures and the occasional odd pair of flip-flops that causes some separation between the big toe and the next toe in line.  Even that is minor, compared to the separation of toes within toe socks.

I can’t even stand to look at toe socks.  They are so unnatural.  Ew!

(Thanks for posting about this—every year I go through this!  LOL)

Toe socks are just wrong on so many levels. My elementary school librarian wore them with sandals, every day of the year… she also had 2 pet ducks she dressed up in little costumes and walked on a leash around the city.

See? That’s the kind of people that wear toe socks.

I had a friend from school who had two joined toes – I bet she hates toe socks more than you.

It makes me sad that there is so little love for toe socks. Very sad. I used to have a whole army of toe socks (even though I hardly EVER wear socks of any flavor) but then we had an incident with, um, laundry being left outside, um, and um, well.. There were lots of victims and I lost most of my army.

I’ve been meaning to build my army again, but seeing as I never wear socks anyway (and we live in a COLD climate) I figured I might as well use the money on something else. Like chocolate!

Okay. So is “woobie” like “boobie” or “woody?” I need to know how to pronounce these things inside my brain.

Next Stop: Oprah! Moxie Client on Dr. Phil!

We were super excited earlier this month when our client, Patricia of MotherinLawHell.com, told us that she was going to be on Dr. Phil’s show.  Woo!  That’s amazing to start.  But when we found out her website was going to be displayed on Dr. Phil’s “big screen” we were even more excited. National television? Syndicated even? Yes, please.

Last Friday the episode aired and I made sure to record it for posterity. Full disclosure: I don’t watch Dr. Phil often (ok, ever), but I was more than happy to watch it that day! And according to Patricia, the Dr. Phil staff “LOVE the design!” and think “it’s so FUN!”.  Yay! We’re thrilled to hear that since we pride ourselves on bold and happy designs. We do fun. Come and knock on our door, Dr. Phil’s staff. Anytime! smile

Island Style Cafe (4/5) on Yelp

I had breakfast here with Lyn P., who recommended it and really, really enjoyed it. The place is really unassuming and since I rarely venture into Tierrasanta, I'd never have known it was there…
